Project: 2016 Georgia DOT Design-Build Bridge Bundles
Client: Georgia Department of Transportation
Through the office of Innovative Delivery, Georgia DOT implemented a new and innovative method called Bridge Bundles, to accelerate the replacement of twenty-five (25) local bridges valued at over $39.6 million. This method used five (5) design-build (DB) contracts that each group four to six bridge replacements geographically, which allows the contractor to efficiently streamline delivery by combining design and construction activities for the bridges in their bundled contract. This concept is especially suitable in rural areas.
Georgia DOT’s first obligation with funds resulting from the HB-170— Transportation Funding Act of 2015 (TFA)—is to maintain and improve existing infrastructure, which includes bridges. The TFA allows the Department to enhance the local transportation network through these projects.
NOVA is proud to be part of the winning design-build teams for four (4) out of the five (5) design-build bridge bundles. NOVA is the geotechnical engineer of record for twenty-one (21) out of the total twenty-five (25) bridges in this first of its kind procurement and bridge replacement effort by GDOT. NOVA is teamed with the CW Matthews/Heath & Lineback team on bundles two (2) and three (3) and we are teamed with the Southern Concrete Construction/Neel Schaffer team on bundles four (4) and five (5).
Additionally, NOVA was contracted by GDOT to collect a portion of the preliminary design information for these projects in the year preceding this procurement. NOVA performed Geotechnical Drilling and sampling services for three (3) out of the five (5) bridge bundles.
