The Dimensional Funds project consisted of the construction of a new corporate headquarters in the center of SouthEnd Charlotte. The structure is a 5-story parking deck (2 stories below grade) with an 11 story office tower (six stories above parking deck). NOVA was selected to provide value engineering during the pre-construction phase of the project due to difficult subsurface conditions which required a redesign of the previously recommended foundation system. NOVA worked with the design/construction team to tailor a supplemental subsurface study to provide data needed to design the new foundation system while minimizing the impacts to the project schedule. NOVA was also selected to provide construction materials testing and special inspections throughout the construction of the structure which consisted of a pre-cast concrete frame with post-tensioned slabs, masonry walls, and structural steel elements. The complex layout of the tower required full time inspections from NOVA personnel who not only provided inspection for review with project plans, but also served as the eyes and ears for the design team in the field by relaying and documenting design and constructability issues in real-time which reduced, and often eliminated, downtime due to questions during redesign. Additionally, when required, NOVA provided forensics services to aid in identifying and remediating construction defects that were identified during construction.
