Client: Wake Tech Community College
Construction for the new 100,000-SF facility at Wake Tech’s northeast Raleigh campus. The facility will house 70,000-SF of ground level lab space with the remainder of the structure consisting of two levels that primarily contain classrooms. The building structure is steel frame with elevated floors composed of composite concrete slabs on metal decks.
The facility not only supports a growing student population, but it also showcases one of the most advanced automotive shop spaces in the region. Drawing on automotive design for inspiration, the building’s exterior abstracts the way a car gently touches the ground at its tires, while sculptural metalwork informs the dynamic form of a perforated screen, offering solar protection for occupants inside. Floor-to-ceiling windows provide staff, students, and visitors with ample views to observe the shops from the classrooms, offices, lobby, and cafe areas. Outdoor public spaces provide socializing and food truck parking, as well as areas to showcase student projects and vehicles.
